DolpoTrek: into the Remote Wilderness of Western Nepal

Dolpo is a remote and culturally rich region in western Nepal, known for it’s breathtaking landscape, ancient traditions and unique way of life. Dolpo is one of the highlight inhabited areas in Nepal, with elevation ranging from 1525m to over 7625m. The region is bordered by Tibet to the north and is home to Shey Phoksundo National park Nepal’s largest trance-Himalayan national park. Dolpo is characterized by it’s rugged terrain, deep valleys and towering peaks, including the Dhaulagiri range. Due to it’s location in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the region experiences a dry climate with minimal rainfall. The landscape is dotted with barren hills, alpine meadows and the pristine lakes, the most famous being Phoksundo lake, known for it’s stunning turquoise waters.

The people of the Dolpo known as Dolpali, are of Tibetan origin and have preserve their ancient customs and traditions.

They primarily follow Tibetan Buddhism with a significant number adhering to Bon, a ore-Buddhist spiritual tradition. The region is home to several monasteries, including the revered Shey Gompa, which all racts pilgrims and spiritual seekers. The Dolpopa practice agro-pastrolism, relying on barley, buckwheat and livestok for sustenance.

Dolpo is a paradise for trekkers and adventurers. The region was opened to trekkers in 1989 A.D and offers some of Nepal’s most challenging and rewarding trails. The lower Dolpo and Upper Dolpo treks provided an opportunity to explore untouched landscapes interact with nomadic communities and witness the raw beauty of the Himalayas. Despite it’s remoteness, Dolpo has gained popularity among travelers seeking an off-the beaten path experience.
